Why are houses such a mess today?

I know I've been on a cleaning kick on this blog, but it's a goal of mine this month to declutter, organize, and simplify my home a bit. I don't think perfection should ever be the goal, because life isn't perfect, but there's always room for improvement.

I love to watch "clean with me" videos on YouTube (some channels more than others), and doing so, I notice that a lot of these content creators' homes are super messy at the beginning. Yes, I know that some of them probably stage the mess or purposely don't clean for a couple of weeks so they have something to film.

But, still, how do these homes get to be such a disaster? I don't remember, growing up, my parents' home (or anyone else's) ever looking like a cyclone hit it. The I realized that the answer is in the question: homes in the past actually could not get that messy. Why not?

1. Houses were smaller. The size of the average suburban home has more than doubled since 1950s, from about 1000 square feet to about 2400 square feet. A family of three in a modern McMansion has about 1000 square feet per person

2. People back then just owned less stuff. For example, wardrobes were smaller, so no need for ridiculously huge walk-in closets. They might have had five pairs of shoes, not 25. Kids had toys, but not enough to fill their entire rooms.

3. Women were often able to stay home and actually take care of the house on a daily basis as well. There was no letting things go till the weekend and then doing fifteen loads of laundry.

As a result of all these factors, houses in my grandparents' generation just never really were able to get too bad.

As I do some spring cleaning, organizing, and purging over the following week (I've taken it off from work), I'm going to try to use the example of our grandparents. Their homes were simpler, with less crap in them... and I really think they were happier. Having too much stuff actually creates stress, and prevents you from appreciating what you have.

Can we listen to the wisdom of our grandparents and make some changes to our homes and lifestyles to enable simpler, more frugal, and happier living? Please share your thoughts, respectfully, in a comment.
